Julie Shiel

"I find beauty in decay. I like to see nature conquering what man has left. I believe that old buildings have a soul, and when I photograph these places I try to capture a piece of that soul."

Julie Shiel focuses on photographing abandoned buildings which have been taken over by nature, in particular, the decay in these buildings. Her work reflects similarly to the idea of man vs. nature which is an interesting perspective and results in interesting outcomes of images.

Abandoned tuberculosis hospital

Due to the angle which this photograph has been taken at, it is really efective because you can see all along the corridor which is interesting and quite sinister. As well as this, I think that the light shining through in certain sections of the corridor is interesting because if the doors to the rooms were closed, the corridor would be even more sinister because it would be dark. I think that the peeling paint on the walls is compelling because it can be seen all the way down the corridor and although it is a neutral colour, in certain areas it looks different due to shadows and lighting. Also, I think that the whole image is striking because the foreground of the image seems quite green and unusual coloured but the background is really dark and eerie.

I quite like the colours in this image because the blue is a pastel colour which is quite cheerful but the leaves which are overground and on the floor and the walls are brown and dark which contrasts. Also, when looking through the window, the plants are bright green which shows that the plants which have taken over the building have actually died and the building has actually overpowered nature. I think this is an interesting photograph due to the fact that it links to 'Man vs. Nature'.
